Lenovo Ready for the VR Market

Lenovo has entered the Virtual Reality race at its TechWorld event in Beijing, with the introduction of the Lenovo VR Goggles. The virtual-reality headset works with Lenovo Android phones and provides an immersive experience by sliding the smartphone into the headset and using it as a display. Similar to Samsung’s Gear VR headset,  Lenovo VR is made primarily of plastic and works by having a smartphone slip into the headset. Company officials have said that the Lenovo VR headset will only work specifically with Lenovo devices, making them strictly tied to Lenovo smartphones could hinder broad adoption.  One advantage of the Lenovo VR headset however, is that users can adjust each eye independently in addition to a main focus option. Pricing and timing of the headsets have not yet been disclosed, however company representatives have said they could be available for market in as little as six months and will most likely launch oversees. In his keynote address, Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing addressed five developing themes that will continue to change the way people use technology by: Creating more natural ways to connect people with devices, Building device and network connections that are reliable, seamless and ubiquitous, Making devices interconnected for rich interactions, Giving customers the power of big data and their own personal cloud and Leveraging smart connectivity to let customers pick the services they want and create their own unique experiences.

The Lenovo VR Goggles require a Lenovo smartphone in order to work, which means the VR Goggles will only launch where Lenovo smartphones are sold. Considering that the company has little presence in the UK and USA, there’s very little chance they’ll launch here but with Lenovo owning Motorola, hopefully the company will also provide compatibility for Motorola smartphones.
