The 28th annual Game Developers Conference (GDC), the world’s largest and longest-running professionals-only game industry event, opens on 17 March at Moscone Center in San Francisco.
Produced by the UBM Tech Game Network, GDC attracts over 23,000 attendees and features over 400 lectures, panels, tutorials and round-table discussions on a comprehensive selection of game development topics taught by leading industry experts.
In addition, GDC Expo showcases the most relevant game development tools, platforms and services helping to drive the industry forward, and the conference also includes the annual Independent Games Festival and Game Developers Choice Awards.
This year’s event features talks from leading Japanese game developers including Capcom veteran and crowdfunding success Keiji Inafune, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn producer/director Naoki Yoshida and Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki, as well as Animal Crossing: New Leaf producer Katsuya Eguchi and director Aya Kyogoku.
Former Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi will also be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards.
PopCap’s Leo Liu will provide a behind-the-scenes look at how Plants vs. Zombies 2 was adapted for the Chinese market, and Yodo1 CEO Henry Fong will explain how Australian indie studio Defiant Development managed to successfully bring its casual mobile title Ski Safari to Chinese iOS and Android markets.
Of special interest to APAC game professionals, GDC 2014 will also include special summits on game localisation and free-to-play games.
In addition, Chinese publisher Tencent will join Unity, Google and Amazon to host GDC developer days, and US-based Videogame History Museum will display rare collectibles and playables from the history of Japanese video game maker Nintendo.
