Crytek has announced an ‘engine-as-a-service’ program for the company’s popular CryEngine game development software at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
“When we announced the new CryEngine this was our first step towards creating an engine as a service,” said Crytek Business Development Director Carl Jones. “We are happy to announce now that the latest update of CryEngine will soon be available to all developers on a subscription basis.”
The royalty-free, US$10 monthly licensing program will offer subscribers full access to the CryEngine cross-platform development suite.
The CryEngine was originally developed by Frankfurt-based Crytek as a technology demo for Nvidia and later released as the game Far Cry in 2004. The platform has been licensed in the APAC region to clients including NCSoft and the Australian Defence Force.
CryEngine 3, the latest version of the development platform, was released in 2009. Crytek is also reportedly working on a new game engine that will carry the CryEngine brand, though a release date has yet to be announced by the company.
