Industry vets establish Pixelmatic mobile game studio

Former Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard and Relic veterans have joined together “to push the current boundaries of social game conventions” with the establishment of Pixelmatic mobile game studio.

“While games are an ideal medium to facilitate connections with new people, most mobile games don’t encourage that type of social interaction – it’s something we want to change,” said Pixelmatic founder and CEO Samson Mow. “A major revival for social games has already taken place in Asia on mobile platforms like LINE, KakaoTalk, and WeChat. We’re on the precipice of a new generation of social mobile games.”

Pixelmatic began operations in June 2012 after securing seed funding last year. The studio’s main development centre is in Shanghai, supported by a small team in Vancouver.

“China (makes sense) because it’s an emerging international game development hub with a lot of untapped talent,” said Pixelmatic CFO Nat Mak. “We’re actively seeking people that share our values of responsibility, excellence, and passion (to) create games that appeal to a worldwide audience.”

Chinese publisher 6waves plans to release the studio’s first title in Japan for both iOS and Android devices.

“We’ve spent the better part of a year building up our technology and developing our first title,” said Pixelmatic CTO Cong Ly. “There’s a huge opportunity on the horizon with the explosive growth of messaging apps, and we believe we’re in a unique position to take advantage of it.”
