Square Enix today reported a first quarter deficit of 493 million JPY (circa US$5 million), a year on year improvement from losses of 2.01 billion JPY (circa US$21 million) recorded last year.

The company confirmed no new major releases for the fiscal period, but noted its web games had seen “steady performance” in the past three months, and that the company’s social title Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur was popular in both Taiwan and Korea.

Square Enix also filed an extraordinary loss of 1.6 billion JPY (US$16.2 million) for the period, the cost associated with “a change in development policy and comprehensive review on work-in-progress game titles,” according to a company statement.
