Nintendo will launch the next edition of the popular Mario Kart series worldwide in May this year. The global release of Mario Kart 8 for Wii U was confirmed in a statement by company president Satoru Iwata.
The original game in the franchise, Super Mario Kart, was launched in 1992 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan. The previous Mario Kart sequel, Mario Kart 7, was launched for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.
An arcade version, Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, was also developed by Bandai Namco and released in Japan last year.
