SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has revealed Project Morpheus, a virtual reality platform the company’s plans to integrate with the Sony PlayStation 4 game console, at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
”Nothing delivers a feeling of immersion better than VR,” said Yoshida. “VR has been a dream of many gamers since the computer was invented. Many of us at PlayStation have dreamed of VR and what it could mean to the gaming community.”
Richard Marks from Sony Magic Lab also joined Yoshida to unveil a prototype VR headset and a list of software partners including Epic Games, Crytek, Autodesk and Unity.
“This prototype also serves as the first development kit for PS4 developers, who are as excited and enthusiastic about this space as us,” added Yoshida. “(This is a) culmination of our work over the last three years to realise our vision of VR for games.”
According to Marks, the headset will feature a 1080p LCD display with a 90 degree field-of-view. The headset will also connect to the PS4 console via HDMI and USB ports and be compatible with the PlayStation Camera, as well as DualShock 4 and PlayStation Move controllers.
Sony has yet to announce a release date for the Project Morpheus virtual reality system, but confirmed plans to release a developer SDK in the near future.
