Mobile apps to boost Asia’s educational game market

A report from market research firm Ambient Insight predicts that the market for educational games in Asia will grow to US$1.723 billion by 2017. The analysis was completed last year and key findings will be presented at this week’s Serious Play Conference in the US.

According to the report, current educational game revenues are heavily concentrated in Asia (US$813 million in 2011). China in particular has also shifted from an educational game importer (mainly from Korea) to a production hub for ‘serious games’.

Telecoms are major distributors in the region, the report notes, with Asian operators selling web-based learning platforms to schools and mobile learning VAS subscriptions to consumers.

The global educational games market is also expected to expand from US$3.9 billion to US$8.9 billion over the next five years, with mobile applications a key driver of growth.

“Mobile educational games have now (out-sold) PC educational games,” said Sam Adkins, chief researcher of the report, “We think the most interesting thing is that investors are very interested in the field of mobile educational applications.”
