International Data Corporation (IDC) and App Annie report that revenues worldwide for Android games rose over 400 per cent in the third quarter of 2013, with iOS game sales also up more than 200 per cent for the period compared to last year.
“While consumers have traditionally spent more on games versus other types of apps, more than 75 per cent of combined iOS & Google Play consumer app spending in 4Q 2013 came from games,” said App Annie CEO Bertrand Schmitt.
The top grossing games in 2013 per platform according to the report were Puzzle & Dragons, Candy Crush Saga and Monster Taming for Kakao (Google Play) and Clash of Clans, Puzzle & Dragons and Candy Crush Saga (iOS App Store).

IDC also noted that the Asia-Pacific region outpaced all other markets worldwide in terms of mobile game spending last year.
“The Google Play ecosystem in particular benefitted from a big regional upswing in the installed base of smartphones and tablets in 2013,” said IDC gaming research director Lewis Ward. “Rising living standards in APAC countries generally also buoyed game spending.”
