SQEX returns to profit but forecasts lower sales

Square Enix

Square Enix has reported operating income of 10.5 billion JPY (US$103 million) for the fiscal year ending 31 March, compared to a 6 billion JPY (US$59 million) operating loss in the previous fiscal year. Net revenues rose to 155 billion JPY (US$1.5 billion), up 4.8 per cent year-on-year.

The company also posted a net profit of 6.6 billion JPY (US$64 million), compared to the previous year’s net loss of 13.7 billion JPY (US$134 million).

Square Enix sold 17.23 million copies of packaged software during the 2013-2014 fiscal year, but expects current fiscal year physical game sales to decline globally to 12 million units, with especially sharp falls in Japan and North America. The publisher also forecasts a decline in digital game sales of 5.6 per cent to 89 billion JPY (US$875 million).

The company anticipates a continuing shift to digital game purchases, and will also launch the publisher’s popular MMO Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in China this year. With no major console titles planned for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the company plans several major smartphone releases as well, including a Final Fantasy title.
