Chinese VC firm Capital Today has invested US$7 million in US-based developer Thatgamecompany.
“We are happy to partner with Capital Today and a team of other investors who share our vision in making meaningful interactive experiences that inspire, connect, and emotionally touch the hearts of players around the world,” said Thatgamecompany studio manager Sunni Pavlovic in a statement.
“With this new investment, our studio is able to scale up development efforts to focus on making the best game possible in the same spirit as flOw, Flower, and Journey,” added Pavlovic. “We’ll also begin laying the infrastructure to self-publish, market, and distribute on our own terms for this next project and beyond.”
Thatgamecompany was co-founded by Kellee Santiago and Jenova Chen in 2006. The studio is known creating for unique titles for Sony platforms, including Flow, Flower and Journey.
On conclusion of the developer’s three-game contract with Sony, the company reorganised in 2012 with US$5.5 million in start-up funding from Benchmark Capital and the goal to self-publish.
“We had the choice of taking on a simpler project and making it easier on ourselves for our first self-published project,” said Pavlovic. “But the public response from Journey a few months into development convinced us we had to keep pushing.”
