Nexon’s ‘Dominations” Strategy For Asia

Nexon, South Korea’s largest game company, will roll out the much-hyped mobile strategy game “Dominations” in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. Starting from “Dominations”, Nexon has pledged to launch mobile games with more diverse genres to expand its presence in Asia, which accounts for more than half the global mobile game market. “The Asian mobile game market holds over 760 million users and generated more than $13.6 billion last year, which is more than half the global market, and is expected to grow further in coming years,” Nexon Korea Mobile Publishing Division Director Scott Yoo said at a press conference in Seoul, last Thursday.

“Nexon is preparing for mobile games with diverse genres and is mulling over localization strategies to meet the different demands of Asian countries. We expect to expand our presence in the mobile sector on the global stage starting from the latter half.” Nexon has continued to strengthen its mobile business to follow the changing market trend from PC online games to mobile. The company posted 91.7 billion won ($77.23 million) in sales in the mobile games sector, up 20 percent year-on-year. This is about 24 percent of its 385.4 billion won sales in the second quarter.

“Dominations” is a mobile strategy game that Nexon has jointly prepared with U.S. games developer Big Huge Games. Launched in Western markets in April, “Dominations” has recorded more than 10 million downloads at the Apple App Store and Google Play as of August. Users choose one of seven civilizations — Greece, Rome, Germany, France, Britain, China and Japan — and develop its culture and compete with other players through network play, Nexon said. It also said Korea will be added as the eighth civilization, with unique “Hwarang” units and specialties in combat tactics and advanced science technologies.

“Asian users will be able to play along with global users in the same service once ‘Dominations’ is launched in Korea, Japan and Taiwan within this month,” Yoo said. “We are also planning to roll out the game in China and looking for a suitable local partner to publish the game in the world’s fastest-growing mobile game market.” Big Huge Games CEO Tim Train said: “We have searched for a publisher for ‘Dominations’ which we believe is capable of maximizing the market opportunity on the global stage. Nexon had accumulated expertise in the Asian market and in publishing free-to-play games that we had looked for.”
