SQEX posts mid-year profits, reveals shift to F2P and smart devices

Square Enix

Japanese game publisher Square Enix has released six-month financial results revealing stable revenues of 61.7 billion JPY with operating profits of 4.7 billion JPY for the period, a significant improvement over the company’s 5.2 billion JPY operating loss in the last fiscal year.

Though sales growth for the two quarters was flat, the company’s digital entertainment and amusement sectors showed positive operating margins, a turnaround from the previous year’s negative results.

According to a press release from the company in conjunction with the financial report, Square Enix will shift strategic focus in the digital entertainment sector to overseas development of F2P online games, and domestic studio production to titles for smart devices (especially from the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series).

Square Enix also plans to expand activities in Asia, with the online success of Kaku-San-Sei Million Arthur in China, Korea and Taiwan paving the way for a possible Chinese launch of the company’s flagship online title FF XIV: A Realm Reborn.
