Korean messaging leader KAKAO moves on mobile games

KAKAO Talk leads the mobile messaging market in Korea and has recently expanded into games and social commerce. KAKAO started its game service last year, with over US$37 million in revenues reported within the first two months of launch.

More than 30 games are now featured in the KAKAO Games portfolio, with hit titles like AniPang and Dragon Flight registering more than 10 million downloads.



KAKAO has also announced three new services for 2013 – Story Plus, Chatting Plus, and KAKAO Page. Story Plus provides a marketing tool for mid-sized companies who want to promote their products and communicate with KAKAO users directly. Chatting Plus embeds third party apps within the KAKAO chatting platform. KAKAO Page makes it easier for individual users to share their content with others.

KAKAO also has more than 30 million users overseas and continues to expand rapidly in foriegn markets. WeMade Entertainment and China’s Tencent have recently invested more than US$83 million in KAKAO.
