GameSpy MP/cloud storage platform to close

GameSpy Technology

Glu Mobile has confirmed that the GameSpy multiplayer matchmaking service and cloud storage platform will be retired worldwide at the end of May. The company discontinued the licensing of new titles on the platform in January 2013.

“Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosting services for all games still using GameSpy,” said the company in a statement. “Thanks for a great ride!”

The GameSpy Technology service, first launched in 1997, operates across several gaming platforms including Android and iOS for mobile devices, Nintendo consoles DS and Wii, Sony consoles PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, and Microsoft Xbox 360, as well as Mac and Windows PCs.

According to Glu, over 800 publishers and developers currently use the service, including Bandai Namco, Capcom, Hudson, Konami, Sega and Square Enix. Glu Mobile acquired GameSpy Technology from IGN Entertainment in August 2012, and the platform has been licensed to over 1,000 titles worldwide.
