PS4 sold out in AU; Sony pledges to restock by February

Sony has confirmed that January stocks of the company’s next-generation PlayStation 4 console have sold out in Australia, as overwhelming demand combined with a near simultaneous launch worldwide (excluding Japan, scheduled for 22 February) have created a pre-holiday supply shortage.

“If you haven’t pre-ordered, it is very unlikely (you’ll see a console before Christmas),” said SCE Australia MD Michael Ephraim. “Unless retailers have had cancellations.”

Ephraim added that the region should receive significant quantities of PlayStation 4 consoles after the New Year, and pledged to replenish stocks in Australia by February.

“The new stock will not only fulfil all current pre-orders but will offer thousands more fans the opportunity to own a PlayStation 4 from February 2014 onwards,” said Ephraim.

As reported earlier, Sony sold 2.1 million PlayStation 4 units as of 1 December, with 700,000 consoles purchased in Europe and Australia within days of their respective releases.

The company’s newest flagship game console launched on 15 November in North America, in Australia, Europe and Latin American countries on 29 November, in Korea and Hong Kong on 17 December, and in Singapore on 19 December.
