Regulators to tighten online payment proceedures in Korea

The government’s Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) is to introduce stricter authentication procedures for online and mobile game micropayments in Korea.

The new certification process is a result of last year’s card hacking controversy in Korea, when over 200 payment cards from several major game companies were compromised. The previous 30K KRW limit will now be eliminated, with Korean regulators to require secure registration procedures for smaller online payments as well.

A FSS spokesperson said, “In order to prevent game site hacking incidents, especially in gambling (transactions), regardless of the game site certificate (users) will (be required) to authenticate themselves via mobile text message.”
