Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network online gaming platforms have been temporarily blocked by automated security censorship software on the Pakistan Internet Exchange. GameRanger, one of the largest online PC gaming providers in the country, has also been blocked by the monitoring system.
The security platform reportedly uses a series of DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) techniques to counter security-circumvention tools such as VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), which on occasion can also shutdown legitimate online content providers using VPNs like XBL and PSN, as well as overseas technology websites such as The Verge and Gizmodo.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is reportedly working to address the problem.
